giants causeway ORIGINAL 1 OF 1 – THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE PAINTING 40,000 interlocking basalt columns formed 50 to 60 million years ago from volcanic lava. Myth states it was the home of the giant Finn McCool who argued with his even larger Scottish cousin Benandonner. Finn formed a road by throwing chunks of the Antrim Coast to form a Causeway but realised his mistake when he saw the size of Benandonner. He beat a hasty retreat and hid, by pretending to be a baby in a pram. This fooled Benandonner into believing the baby’s Father would be even bigger than him.
